Music Is Life

Music is a widely held culture, which varies greatly between places and times. Every tribal group, including the most isolated ones, djpunjab have a distinctive form of music they identify themselves with. Its history is a bit murky, but different sources suggest it may have been invented in Africa before evolving into an essential segment of human life.

The history of music dates back to prehistoric times. Otherwise known as primitive music, prehistoric music was the name given to any kind of music produced within the preliterate era. Although there’s no documented evidence for the existence of music at such a time, different archeological excavations suggest music was well etched to human history at the time.

Prehistoric music was closely followed by the ancient music—around 1500 BC, before morphing into early music and later on classical music.

The early stages of music—starting from prehistoric times, were mainly characterized by drums and percussions instruments, all of which took over from rocks and sticks. Mostly, the ancient people used music in religious ceremonies. No writing or notation best describes the kind of music produced at the time, but some sounds can still be extrapolated from the music of African natives and American Indians.

The evolution of advanced instruments was slow but very steady. By around 4000 BCE, it’s believed the ancient Egyptians had already created flutes and harps. This was followed shortly after by the invention of double-reeded clarinets and lyres—3500 BCE.

Denmark then added trumpets (around 2500 BCE); anciently know as natural trumpets, to the list of instruments developed by then. Their trumpets featured valves, but depended heavily on the twisting of lips to alter the pitch.

It was until 1500 BCE that the Hittites first introduced the guitar. This gave music a huge leap, since the use of frets to alter the pitch of vibrating strings would later on stir the invention of harpsichord and violin.

The first recorded piece of music can be traced around 800 BCE. It was a religious hymn written in cuneiform. Please note; cuneiform is not considered a form of music notation.

By 700 BCE, there were recorded songs that included vocals fused with instrumentals. This invention gave music a new dimension.

The History of Music in Ancient Greece and Rome

Greece was the founder of Classical art. That explains why classical music is deeply rooted in the Grecian culture. Around 600 BCE, Pythagoras—a famed mathematician—dissected music as a science. He is also the brain behind the keystone of contemporary music, otherwise dubbed the octave scales.

If anything, Greeks are well known for internalizing music. At their leisure time, they could foster great artistic skills. First they had trumpet competitions that were started at around 400 BCE. They are also acknowledged for being the brain behind the introduction of bricks in music; thanks to Aristotle for writing the music theory scientifically and layering the modern day notation—350 BCE—that great brains in music still study to date.

Another notable evolution of music was stirred by Boethius. After arriving in Western Europe with the Greek notation, he helped the musicians he met to scribe their folk songs accurately. He’s also credited for introducing the opera.

The Renaissance of music

Music underwent total renaissance in 1465, when musicians first printed it on paper. This was considered a huge break through, as it allowed composers to organize their pieces and make a living out of them. In 1490, the writings of Boethius on opera got republished in Italian.

The dawn of Renaissance brought with it a set of new rules in music. This resulted into a new era of enlightened minds that would later on give birth to some of the greatest musicians the world has ever known.
